I would say to sit ups every second day and do something else like walking, running, lifting weights, etc. When you do sit ups at first you will feel it but after awhile if you continue to do sit ups everyday your body will get use to it and then it will not work as much basically you will come to a plateau of sorts. So every second day with something else in between and then you will be toning other areas as well.
Definitely listen to those who are telling you to lose the fat first. Then, DO NOT work your abs everyday. You must be able to perform at least 300 abdominal crunches every-other day, then when you are able to reach the 300-count, move on to 600 crunches every third day. Good luck.
you have to have body fat in the 10% range to have visible abs.No matter how strong or toned you cant see them through fat.Sit ups are not the best exercise for abs and you don’t want or need to do 100s of reps. The best exercise is the hanging leg raise, these are what gymnasts (the best ones)do.Sit ups and unweighted crunches are for middle age house wives.Put a plate on your chest and do fewer reps.
What do you mean by good abs? If you mean by stronger you probably will have better abs than you do right now. You also need to do other excercises, walking, running, streching, arobics, weight lifting to lose fat so that it will show a six pack if that is what you are going for.
You also need to make sure and have a healthy diet. Good luck and happy sitting up.
"Full sit-ups are just wasted effort," says Palm Springs, Calif., trainer Scott Cole, co-creator of the Best Abs on Earth video. "You’re only working your abs in the first 30 percent of the movement." If you can perform 300 crunches, you’re probably crunching too quickly, relying on momentum rather than muscle power. Or perhaps you’re using your arms to fling your neck forward rather than lifting from your torso. "You should be able to isolate your abs in 20 crunches or less," he says.
In real life, your abs work with other muscles – your back and gluteal muscles – to stabilize your spine. So it makes more sense to train them in conjunction with these muscles than to isolate them with a movement, such as the crunch, that is foreign to daily life or sports. "Crunches don’t allow your abs to lengthen fully," Cole says. "If you watch Marion Jones sprinting, you’ll see her abs lengthening and contracting as they stabilize her torso. Athletes don’t do 800 crunches or have Ab Rollers. The people who have great abs take a multidimensional approach." Cole suggests tai chi, kickboxing or a power-yoga class that emphasizes core-focused exercises.

You may get good abs but whether or not anyone can see them depends on your body fat.. so, yes, crunch away, but also make sure that you are making smart nutritional choices to support a healthy body weight and consider adding in some cardio a few times a week if you have any chub to lose.
The muscles will be strong, but do some walking to burn off the fat on top of the muscle. Some people target only one area and wonder why they can’t see any six-pack. Its because there is fat covering all that muscle. Make sure you do some exercises for the rest of your body too.
Yes, they will help tighten you up but you also need to watch what you eat. There’s no point in doing sit ups if you eat fatty foods. Try to avoid breads, pastas, beer, and carbonated drinks. Eat plenty of protein/meat and salads. Chicken is good too. Get your heartbeat up. Jog for a minute or two to get your heartbeat up. When you do that, it helps burn fat faster.
