I divide my client’s abdominal exercises into 3 areas. There is the area above the belly button, the area below the belly button and the love handles. The regular type of crunch with the knees slightly bent is for the upper abdominal region and when the legs are elevated off of the floor as in the lower leg held in the air and forming a 90 degree angle to the upper leg or resting on a bench or swiss ball then the lower abdominal region will be worked. When the knees are slightly bent and the torso is held at a 45 degree angle and there is a rotation of the torso from left to right while placing a medicine ball on the floor with my hands in the direction of the rotation then the oblique muscles (love handle area) will be worked.
