You could do 5000 crunches a day and never see your abs. Crunches do not burn fat. To see your abs you have to remove the layer of fat covering them.
    It’s just that simple.

So if you want to see your abs you have to watch your diet. You do have to do ab exercises so that once the fat is stripped your abs will look defined.

Abs are made up of different fibers to other muscles. They respond best to a slightly higher rep range.

So here’s what you should do.
3 times a week do 30-45 minutes of cardio to burn the fat. You need to go at a pace where you can just keep a conversation.

3 times a week do abs.
Do this as a circuit (in other words do 12 set of 1 exercise followed by a set of the other and repeat)
    1) Crunches 15-20 reps
    2) Leg raise 15-20 reps
Repeat the circuit 3 times. Rest 30-60 seconds between sets.
When you feel that 20 reps are too easy slow it down to add resistance.

Well if you have fat over your abs, you’ll most likely never see them if you don’t do cardio also. I would do 6 sets of 25-50 crunches throughout the day. But then you also need to job/run/etc. about 30 minutes a day.
