I’ve been hearing all over that sit ups are pointless? Is this true? If yes, are there any muscle building ab exercises that will give results?

its not that they are pointless, its just that if you dont do cardio, it wont matter, because the fat is still overtop of the muscles.
If you want to tone the muscles over the stomach, do crunches (on an exercise ball is best).
If you are wanting to get rid of fat that is located over the stomach you will have to get rid of that through a combination of diet and exercise. You can’t do one exercise and spot reduce.
Often the fat around the middle is the last to release once you start losing weight.

All REAL abdominal exercises work when done properly and in sufficient amount. Sit-ups are no longer recommended because they tend to create back issues for many people. The crunch is the preferred method and leg lifts if you are careful to support your lower back. There are also many new products available to make ab work more fun. Done with commitment, they all work, but you will never see the results of what you’ve accomplished if you have a layer of fat covering your abs. If that’s an issue also you are going to have to incorporate some aerobic exercise also (which really should be part of your routine anyway).
